How’d that penetrating lubricant, (aerokroil?) work for you?

I ended up being able to get an impact wrench on the bolt without using a swivel or extension, and that provided enough torque to crack it.

Of course when I finally got everything back together the truck throws CPS codes, so either the the flywheel was out of spec or the CPS got damaged when I mounted the transmission back up.

Nice on the first bit, damnit on the second part.  OFC that shit happens.  Joys of wrenching.

16 cylinders and what, 240hp?

Well, the 2UZ makes around 245 on its own and the GMC has a modern-ish 350 crate engine in it with a mild cam, edelbrock four barrel , edelbrock intake manifold , hedman long tubes and an MSD ignition. Never had it dyno’d, because who gives a shit, but it’s probably making a bit over -5 hp.

It now has a Hughs Performance TH350 in it now along with Hughs TC. Gonna have a an aluminum driveshaft made, as the steel one it has is not that safe at the speeds it’s capable of according to the driveshaft fabricators (oops).  Not sure the truck was ever safe to go modern highway speeds, but I definitely don’t want to break a shaft. The GMC has an LSD, so she hooks up a lot better than the Toyota. Gets about half the fuel economy, though.

Yeah, I’m loving it. Was able to take it out camping north of Tucson over the weekend, and got a bunch of house shit hauled around . Very smooth and comfy.

How’s the Porsche doing?

Nice, way to press it into use right away! I really need to get back down to Tucson again sometime and see if my aunt and uncle’s old family place is still there, was out in the hills. Probably unrecognizable and overrun by city now.

Porsche is...borked. E ngine started rattling off idle slightly , sounds like a collapsed chain tensioner. It’s been parked since early December because I can’t afford the parts to fix it and haven’t had the time to commit to take it apart. Engine needs to come out, and though that’s easy in and of itself, I don’t want to do it more than once for awhile so I’ll knock out as much “while I’m in there” stuff as I can. Just have to save some coin, because parts prices are fucking insane, even at my cost.

Unrelated, I found a site and IG recently called Waypoints West that you would appreciate, cool history and offroady stuff.

Fortunately, outside of downtown, Tucson hasn’t changed too much over the years. Bit of development, but with Phoenix sucking all the CAP water, they were limited with how much they could grow. Oracle, AZ, hasn’t changed a bit since I was last there in 2006 or so.

Had the same shit happen on my CL450 over the summer, thankfully it decided to skip timing as I was pulling onto my street. Teaching a “breakerspace” class this semester and tearing apart the engine with middle schoolers. Gonna be pulling the head next week. I’m getting out of teaching, but finding a place that lets me design a class around this is giving me second thoughts...

We need to start an underground parts exchange for people that can fix shit themselves. Keep inflation down for us doe’rs.

Good to know there’s hope yet, I miss going down there. Still have family there, a Southwest road trip is in order.

Super cool you’ve found that niche in school, how cool is that to rip into bike engines in class? Skills that aren’t taught in school anymore, I think you’re doing them a great service.

I’m building contacts in the Porsche world of other like-minded guys who do their own wrenching, and we all complain about the parts costs. Perhaps eventually things will settle down, but I’m not too optimistic. Our best west coast dismantler just closed up shop too. Meanwhile I’m over here taking drivetrains out of 944s on the side in exchange for a set of wheels to flip for parts money.
